A minimum of 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio's Largest Security Action on Gangs
No less than 64 civilians died in a security raid cracking down on the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's records.
Four police officers were among those killed during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials reported. More than 80 individuals were taken into custody.
Violent conflicts erupted when about 2,500 law enforcement officers initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization reacted using gunfire, igniting obstacles and using drone-dropped explosives, authorities stated.
The International human rights organization said it was "appalled" by the police operation, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Mission Consequences
The area of favelas adjacent to Rio's airport is seen as the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.
State officials stated no less than 50 of the fatalities were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".
Numerous individuals were wounded, including non-combatants affected by the violence.
Resident Accounts
Residents have compared the elevated neighborhood - home to about 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the raid started.
Access ways continue shut across the area.
Gang Growth
The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their territory across the Rio state, growing illegal substance trade paths and control of the hillside favelas.
Local law enforcement stated over 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were captured in the operation, along with numerous weapons.
Raid Preparation
The joint operation by different law enforcement agencies was preceded by a twelve-month inquiry.
Many of the individuals are considered members of a faction from the Pará state who are at the moment taking refuge in the city.
