Rob Edwards along with O'Neil represent the initial candidates in the frame to succeed the former manager as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Furthermore Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have historic links to the club - are part of the options to be considered by the Wolves leadership.

Nevertheless the ex- Luton head coach - who played more than 100 of appearances for the club during his time as a player - is said to be a leading candidate for the position.

The mid-career manager is said to have backing from the Wolves board as they start the search of appointing a fresh head coach.

O'Neil is also emerging as a unexpected contender, even though he would be a surprising choice given he was sacked by Wolves in December last year.

The ex- West Ham United midfielder is out of work which means the club would not be required to pay any compensation.
