Kalimuendo Fires as Nottingham Forest Claim Sentimental Win Over Malmö
“Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that,” was chanted through the stadium as Forest supporters reveled in a further win against their Swedish opponents. Much has occurred since Trevor Francis’s winning header clinched the continental trophy back in the year 1979, but the club continue to treasure those memories. Equally, major changes have occurred in the weeks since the manager took charge, with the team looking refreshed and earning a comfortable victory thanks to goals from Kalimuendo, Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, boosting their hopes of advancing in the Europa League.
Building Steam with Another Straight Win
For Forest, this result – against a Malmö side that had been inactive for nearly a month after ending sixth in their domestic league – represented a third straight win across every tournament and further built on the positive energy gained from the previous week's success at Anfield. While this fixture was a re-run of the club's historic triumph in name, the game itself was devoid of any significant tension or nerves.
This was an event filled with nostalgia, an eagerly awaited reunion and the third competitive clash between the teams since the European Cup final 46 years ago.
Forest fully embraced the history, honoring the heroes of 1979 by giving them, along with their Malmö opponents, the red-carpet treatment. Thirteen members of the Malmö's squad from then were also in attendance. The two clubs shared a meal together before the kick-off. Forest legends and their teammates received a tumultuous welcome when they assembled on the pitch a quarter of an hour before kick-off, and a typically superb display was unveiled in the Trent End.
Remembering the Past
“May 30, 1979, John Robertson delivered the ball from the left flank,” displayed half of a giant tifo, in capital letters. While nobody required a reminder of what happened next, the rest was unfurled as the squads emerged from the tunnel. “There is Francis,” it continued. Another stunning display showed Brian Clough watching proceedings beside his right-hand man Taylor on a dugout at the Olympiastadion.
Control from the Outset
So, Forest had drunk in those wonderful recollections, but what about the performance on the night? It was impressive, as well. They were in complete control from the moment Kalimuendo fired an attempt wide inside two minutes and established a 2-0 advantage by the break. Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Zach Abbott, on his maiden European start, tried his luck.
It felt fitting that Ryan Yates, who came to the club as an eight-year-old, made the first dent in the visitors' defense led by their own academy product skipper, Pontus Jansson, previously of Leeds and Brentford. The home defender Milenkovic saw a cross deflect off a opponent and into the pathway of Yates, who finished with his right foot from the edge of the penalty area to score his first goal since last March.
Another Strike Seals Control
The scorer was involved in the team's second goal on the verge of half-time, too, his free header parried by Malmö’s goalkeeper Ellborg but the alert forward on hand to tap in the loose ball from close range. James McAtee, the midfielder handed a rare start and just his second appearance since the autumn, was the spark, chipping a delicious ball towards his teammate at the back post.
A minute earlier, Callum Hudson-Odoi driven shot was turned aside off Malmö back Rösler, son of ex- Man City striker Uwe, and an free the defender had previously had a strong header instinctively saved by Ellborg, who was back in place of the former Aston Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen.
Opponent's Struggles
This was Malmö’s initial game since the domestic league ended on November 9th, and they found it hard to equal Forest’s intensity. The Reds extended the lead to three when the defender scored after his defensive colleague Murillo headed back a set-piece. The captain had a volley blocked, but the Serbia centre-back Milenkovic feasted on the rebound.
Forest then pushed for more, with Hudson-Odoi chipping a effort on to the crossbar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an ambitious effort off target from 30 yards. It was that kind of nights. The manager, mindful of the upcoming domestic fixture here against Brighton & Hove Albion, implemented seven changes from the team that stunned Liverpool at Anfield last weekend, when they also netted three goals, though he introduced Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and further fresh legs during the second half.
Smooth Evening for the Team
It turned out to be a flawless evening for Nottingham Forest. Dyche could withdraw the defender with the game long since boxed off and subsequently introduced 19-year-old defender Sinclair for his first-team debut. Dyche talked about the Forest old guard providing “valuable insights” at regular meetings and, almost five decades on, the current crop demonstrated they are capable of producing of thrills, as well.
