Texas Top Legal Officer Sues Tylenol Makers Regarding Autism Claims

Legal Proceedings
The Texas Attorney General, who supports former President Trump campaigning for US Senate, alleged pharmaceutical manufacturers of withholding potential dangers of acetaminophen

Texas Attorney General Paxton is suing the makers of acetaminophen, claiming the firms hid potential risks that the pain reliever presented to pediatric cognitive development.

This legal action arrives a month after Donald Trump promoted an unverified association between taking acetaminophen - also known as acetaminophen - while pregnant and autism in offspring.

The attorney general is taking legal action against J&J, which formerly manufactured the medication, the sole analgesic approved for women during pregnancy, and Kenvue, which now manufacturers it.

In a official comment, he stated they "deceived the public by making money from discomfort and promoting medication without regard for the potential hazards."

The manufacturer says there is no credible evidence linking acetaminophen to autism spectrum disorder.

"These corporations misled for generations, knowingly endangering countless individuals to line their pockets," the attorney general, a Republican, declared.

Kenvue commented that it was "very worried by the perpetuation of misinformation on the reliability of acetaminophen and the likely effects that could have on the welfare of US mothers and children."

On its official site, the company also said it had "continuously evaluated the relevant science and there is insufficient valid information that shows a proven link between consuming acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder."

Organizations acting on behalf of physicians and healthcare providers agree.

ACOG has stated paracetamol - the primary component in Tylenol - is among limited choices for pregnant women to manage pain and elevated temperature, which can pose significant medical dangers if ignored.

"In over twenty years of studies on the consumption of acetaminophen in pregnancy, no reliable research has definitively established that the consumption of paracetamol in any trimester of gestation leads to neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring," the group stated.

The court filing mentions recent announcements from the Trump administration in arguing the drug is allegedly unsafe.

In recent weeks, the former president generated worry from public health officials when he advised expectant mothers to "resist strongly" not to use Tylenol when sick.

The FDA then published an announcement that medical professionals should contemplate reducing the use of Tylenol, while also stating that "a causal relationship" between the medication and autism in children has not been established.

The Health Department head RFK Jr, who oversees the FDA, had pledged in spring to conduct "extensive scientific investigation" that would identify the origin of autism in a limited time.

But authorities advised that identifying a single cause of autism - thought by researchers to be the result of a intricate combination of genetic and environmental factors - would not be simple.

Autism is a category of enduring cognitive variation and impairment that affects how individuals encounter and interact with the environment, and is diagnosed using physician assessments.

In his lawsuit, Paxton - aligned with the former president who is running for US Senate - alleges Kenvue and J&J "intentionally overlooked and sought to suppress the science" around acetaminophen and autism.

This legal action aims to force the firms "remove any commercial messaging" that claims acetaminophen is secure for pregnant women.

This legal action echoes the grievances of a assembly of mothers and fathers of young ones with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who filed suit against the manufacturers of acetaminophen in recently.

Judicial authorities dismissed the lawsuit, declaring studies from the parents' expert witnesses was not conclusive.
